Opening new windows?

If you've taken computer-related advice from me before, you'll know I have a rather dim view of Microsoft's latest incarnation of their operating system, Windows Vista. And yet, all my experience with the product is a few minutes spent trying to configure a housemate's computer with Vista installed in a language I can't understand.

Well, I've been holding an upgrade disc included with my computer for some time. Now that Service Pack 1 is out (RTM) I think it's time to try it before I knock it some more. Besides, it's rather embarrassing when you're asked for computer help and you have to say your knowledge is outdated... :P I might be selling my soul to the devil, but then again, I've used Windows for over 13 years. Lucy's probably traded my soul on by now.

Benchmarks published online say an in-place upgrade is no worse than a clean install, so I'm going to try that. And, since there's a learning curve involved, I resolve to stick with it for at least 14 days before (1) I decide it's nice and keep using it; (2) format and go back to XP.

I have the DVD, one afternoon, water, chocolate and a novel.

Wish me luck.
