Another of my favourite songs for a long time. The first version of this song I heard was Josh Groban's cover, which was extensively played in Malaysia, both on music TV and the radio. I did not know then that it was a cover; it was a very good rendition of the song nonetheless.
I became aware that it was a cover when last summer I received a Secret Garden album from my old friend as a birthday present. I had been surprised to find the title in the track listing, and looked it up.
The original is written and performed by Secret Garden; the lyrics sung by an Irishman named Brian Kennedy. I cannot say if his voice is better than Groban's; both their versions sound very good to me, albeit in different ways. Secret Garden's instrumental rendition is without a doubt better than Groban's accompaniment. And one gets the full lyrics, with an extra verse.
Here's a live version of the song on YouTube:
This song makes the Once in a Red Moon album worth buying. Also worthy of attention in that album are 'Gates of Dawn' with its beautiful lyrics and the very Celtic-flavoured 'Greenwaves', both featuring Scottish singer Karen Matheson. On the instrumental front, noteworthy tracks are 'Awakening', 'Fairytale' and the title track 'Once in a Red Moon'.
OK, I sound like someone trying to sell this album. Might as well finish... if you are in the UK you can buy this album from Amazon.co.uk or Play.com for as little as £5.
